What I Do Best by Kholyn

Sewing & crafting are fun! I find it truly satisfying to make beautiful things out of basically nothing. I learn my first needle trick from my late grandmother. She taught me how to tread needles. I progress from there by learning from my mom how to sew loose buttons.
Next I learnt how to knit using crochet hook at a children camp organized by my church. I was so excited to be able to knit cute little blouses for my dolls and quickly applied the same technique learned to make little hats & shoes for my dolls. Cross stitch comes naturally right after that and I should thank my aunts for getting me interested in it.

Eventually I set my eyes on sewing. I sew two pieces of blue and red fabrics together to make my first pillow case. Later I even tried to sew a princess outfit for a custom party but got my blouse wrong. The only success that came out from that attempt was a modified skirt with lace for my so called princess look. Sigh… Not long after that I have my eyes set on sewing little pouch and bags with zippers.

On the other hand, while attending to my aunt & uncle’s handicraft shop in Miri, I took up jewellery making as well. I’m proud to say that I know the basic know how to create my own earrings, bracelets and necklaces. Manage even to sold some of it to my friends and colleagues. But mostly I gave them away as birthday gifts.

Finally, my latest project is on quilting. I took an interest in quilting many years ago when I saw a lady sewing fabrics onto cut out pieces of cigarette boxes while tending to her shop. Eventually, I could see how she sews those pieces together to create some beautiful patterns on her quilt. Over time, I have come up with my own version of quilting. Instead of sewing pieces of fabrics onto cut out square or hexagon manila cards, I chose to staple it just for the sake of making everything easier. However, I have to be extra careful on the fabrics that I chose since I don’t want to ruin it with two ugly holes after I remove the staple. The rest are piece of cake, I just joined all the pieces randomly or I arrange it to come up with different shapes and patterns. As I sew the pieces together, I would make sure that all the sides are lined up nicely.

I would like to point out that I am not perfect when it comes to sewing and crafting.  However, I do believe when there is a will, there’s going to be a way. Once you have your mind on something that you would like to do, put your heart into it. You would never regret that decision.
The irony is that though I like sewing so much, I am clueless around sewing machine. Haha… Regrettably only recently I learned to use youtubes for sewing & crafting tips and tutorials. The world of sewing & crafting are now at my finger tips. So, what’s next?
